Earlier you mentioned Universal Soldier. If another film in the series came along would you be interested in joining the cast?

Yeah, I would love to! I would absolutely love to but I just don’t think it performed as well as we had hoped. I think it was too smart for a lot of people. I’m really proud of the film and I think John Hyams did a great job writing and directing it, and we did a film that very much stands on its own and could take the franchise off in a new direction. So yes, if another opportunity came up I would definitely be up for it.

I watched it a second time last week, and it really is a good movie. The direction John Hyams takes is really interesting (and the balls on this director !). I would love him to continue the serie in this dark, gritty and horror direction.
Funny enough, I watched Apocalypse Now a couple of days later, and the parallel is really interesting.

I think he had some good ideas for a new opus but the film apparently didn't do so well commercially, in the US especially...

Martin Kessler‏ @MovieKessler

Between Skin Trade and Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, I think Dolph Lundgren should make a movie with Nicolas Winding Refn.

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning often looks more like an art instillation piece than a typical action film.

I'm positive everyone will be glad to learn that John Hyams will have two movies out in 2018. The first will be All Square a bit of a departure for him, it will be a comedic drama about a gambling addict betting on children's games. It will be good to see him testing himself a bit there. The second film is Alone, a survivalist thriller about a woman escaping killers in the woods.

Yup!

I hope he and Dolph manage to make another film together soon or later, they're pretty close, Dolph got him a little involved in SKIN TRADE, offered him to direct (that was 6 months before Tony Jaa came on board) and would call Hyams for friendly advice or support while filming, and he has been thinking of him for another couple of projects, WITHOUT YOU I'M NOTHING and another one I'm not sure which one it is (maybe COOL BURN he mentioned to me last year)...

Imagine if Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” were the latest sequel in the “Die Hard” franchise, and you’ll have an idea of just how stark the tone shift between “Day of Reckoning” and the other Universal Soldier films really is.

Few action movie franchises have as much of a wonky, non-linear history as the “Universal Soldier” movies. How many other series start out on the big screen, produce two made-for-TV sequels, return to the big screen, and then finally reach their arguable pinnacle in the straight-to-DVD arena? As if that road didn’t have enough twists and turns already, 2012’s “Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning” takes one of the sharpest turns in the history of sequels, steering away from the series’ normal testosterone-drenched battle of biceps and dropping the viewer into a whacked-out, Aronofsky-esque “Twilight Zone” episode with the tonal vibes of a horror movie and easily the most out-and-out barbaric fight sequences that the franchise has ever delivered.
