Watched this the other day, and like Jox stated, it's a misfire. I wanted to like this one, but sadly, it's boring. Which I hate saying considering the Van Damme-Lundgren combo.

THE GOOD:
- Sadly, the only positive with this one is the gimmick of seeing Van Damme and Lundgren on screen together again, this time on the same side.
- Lundgren has a fun character to play, much more so than Van Damme, who while he's not employing the same tired-schtick he's been doing for the past decade, there's not much to his character. VD's a CIA operative, blah, blah, zero character arc there. And for this being a team-up between the two leads, they're unfortunately not on screen together very much leading to...

THE BAD:
- Lundgren has maybe ten minutes of screen time, and that's being generous.
- This is following the exact story beats as 2013's ESCAPE PLAN, which in itself came about 15 years too late. BLACK WATER is no different. A re-teaming of VD and Lundgren shoulda happened about ten years ago.
- Is there anything more tired than the submarine thriller? Especially in 2018? This was tired and boring back in 2000 when Dolph did AGENT RED (which was a remake of another lame submarine thriller, COUNTER MEASURES). This was similar to ALTITUDE in a sense... Hijacked plane thrillers wore out their welcome 20 years ago; ALTITUDE wasn't covering any new territory. BLACK WATER is no different.
- VD gets two female accomplices here, both potential love interests... And disturbingly, they're old enough to be his daughters... I understand that there's this unwritten law in Hollywood that no female over the age of 35 can be a love interest in an action movie. But it's become extremely unsettling and disturbing seeing this in these guy's movies. The older Dolph and VD get, their love interests get younger... :( Huh?
-Fight scenes are pretty lacking. I understand that VD doesn't always want to do martial arts, but there's only so much senseless gunfire that one can handle before it gets old.
- As Jox pointed out, stock footage is prevalent here, but it plays better and feels more organic than in AGENT RED. But there's also the same CGI shot of the submarine that comes in every 15 minutes to remind viewers that this takes place on a sub.
- There's a twist at the end (don't worry, not going to give it away  ), but Dolph's last scene in the film I felt was pretty mean-spirited and a little out of character...

Worth a rental and a watch, especially for fans of these two guys. But for someone who was dying to see these guys re-team and on the same side no less, it's disappointing to see it in the form of a rote submarine thriller.

In the Season 8 - Episod 25 of Hawai 5.0 (Waiho Wale Kahiko) too, there is russian submarine, and the CGI are awfull too ! Obviously, submarines are falling out of fashion in fictions todays

Thankfully I'd say BLACK WATER stands way above ALTITUDE, even though it's set in similar territory.

That's certainly a bit closer to home. I will probably end up getting that one if the USA doesn't get a Blu-Ray of this on either.

So, sounds like this compared to Escape Plan 2: Hades, Black Water is the better movie of the two.

I don't know how much it really cost but that's three or four times the entire budget right there.
