EDIT:
'Aquaman' Tops $940 Million Worldwide
https://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4473&p=.htm
It's a third straight weekend atop the weekend box office for Warner Bros.'s Aquaman as the film pushed over $940 million worldwide, becoming the highest grossing worldwide release in the DC Extended Universe. However, Sony's release of Escape Room made sure this weekend wasn't all about holdovers. The PG-13 horror/thriller made some some noise of its own, delivering a surprise runner-up finish, helping prove once again that the beginning of the year is fertile ground for horror film debuts.

With an estimated $30.7 million, WB and DC Comics's Aquaman is the #1 film at the domestic weekend box office for the third straight weekend. The film's domestic cume now totals nearly $260 million and has now pulled even with Wonder Woman's performance after 16 days in release while still pacing behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a film Wonder Woman quickly left behind after 23 days in release. Aquaman will most likely follow suit and, once again, finish #1 at the box office next weekend, becoming the first film in the DCEU to secure the top spot four weekends in a row.

Internationally, Aquaman added another $56.2 million this weekend from 79 markets for a running overseas cume totaling $681 million and a global tally surpassing $940 million. The film's international cume is the largest among DC Comic adaptations, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises ($636.8m) while the worldwide cume ranks third behind The Dark Knight Rises ($1.084 billion) and The Dark Knight ($1 billion). Aquaman's leading overseas market is China with $282.8 million, nearly $250 million more than South Korea with $35.3 million. The February 8 release in Japan serves as the film's last key market yet to see release.

When 'Aquaman' Tops $1 Billion Today, James Wan Will Make Box Office History

Aquaman may not be the top movie of the weekend, but it’s still the proverbial top dog (or fish) of the moment. The Jason Momoa/Amber Heard DC Films flick earned $4.5 million (-51%) on Friday to bring its domestic cume to $275m after 22 days in theaters. That positions it for a $15.4m (-50%) weekend and $286m 24-day cume. It might be a close call, but it should reach the $300m domestic milestone by the end of Martin Luther King Day.

With $4.5 million on its fourth Friday in North America and a $5.4m overseas for a new $988.6m global cume, Aquaman should either be over the $1 billion mark by tonight or over the milestone by like 12:04 am on Sunday. But it’ll happen this weekend, quite possibly today. And when it does, it’ll be the third DC Comics flick to top $1b after The Dark Knight ($1.004b in 2008 sans 3-D and China) and The Dark Knight Rises ($1.084b in 2012 with China but still without 3-D boosts).

It’ll be the third-biggest DC Comics movie, the biggest DC Films earner and the second-biggest non-sequel solo superhero flick behind only Black Panther. Among all solo superhero movies, it’s behind the Dark Knight sequels, Iron Man 3 ($1.215 billion in 2013) and Black Panther ($1.346b in 2018). It’s already the biggest solo superhero movie (sans inflation or exchange rates) sans Batman, Spider-Man or Iron Man outside of Black Panther.

It’s the first movie not released by Walt Disney or Universal/Comcast to gross over $1 billion since Paramount/Viacom’s Transformers: Age of Extinction ($1.104b) back in June of 2014. Once it tops that flick (and Skyfall at $1.108b in 2012), it’ll be the biggest-grossing such non-Disney/non-Universal effort since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part II ($1.3b). That film opened two weeks after Transformers: Dark of the Moon ($1.2b) in July of 2011.

It makes James Wan one of eight directors (counting the Russos as a singular unit) to have two movies in the $1b+ club, alongside Chris Nolan (Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises for Warner Bros.), Michael Bay (Transformers 3 and Transformers 4 for Paramount/Viacom), Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey for New Line), Joss Whedon (Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron for Walt Disney), Pierre Coffin (Minions and Despicable Me 3 for Universal), the Russo Bros. (Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War for Disney) and James Cameron (Titanic for Paramount/Fox and Avatar for Fox).

Yes, noting inflation and exchange rates, the likes of Despicable Me 2 and Pirates 3, to say nothing of all six Middle Earth movies, every Harry Potter flick and the first six Star Wars movies, surely would have gotten over the hump in today’s grosses. As noted on Monday, Aquaman joins Universal's Furious 7 ($1.5 billion in 2015) as Wan’s second such blockbuster. And it makes him only the second filmmaker, alongside James Cameron, to score two $1b+ earners that aren’t in the same franchise.

You can differentiate Wan’s commercial triumphs as a director hopping into a preexisting brand (like, say, the Russos) and Cameron’s two non-sequel and (Avatar sequels notwithstanding) non-IP-driven mega-hits as being both separate from the pack and separate from each other. Wan’s hits puts him in a league of his own alongside (but separate from) Cameron’s triumphs. Oh, and since Titanic was a Fox picture that was distributed in North America by Paramount, James Wan is the first guy to have two $1b+ earners from two different studios.

Yes, the Russos will have three such $1 billion+ grossers after Avengers: Endgame. Oh well, Wan will have to settle for that whole “reinvented the horror genre two or three times” thing. Wes Craven would have enjoyed Aquaman too.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Aquaman” Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide (press release)
https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/ ... 3005040/en
BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Aquaman” has stormed the box office, taking in more than $1 billion worldwide in just over one month since it reigned supreme in its first market, China. The announcement was made today by Ron Sanders, President of Worldwide Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures Group and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

“We’re thrilled audiences around the world have embraced ‘Aquaman’ in such a big, big way,” said Sanders. “Jason, the filmmakers and the team at DC have delivered a film that people love, and we are so appreciative of their support.”

Wan stated, “Firstly, Massive LOVE and THANK YOU to the fans and audiences around the world. Humbled by the way you’ve embraced ‘Aquaman’ and how it has resonated on a global scale. I’ll forever be indebted to Jason for turning Aquaman into one of the coolest, cinematic Super Heroes ever, and becoming the gold standard for this character for generations to come. Huge thank you to the amazing cast—Amber, Patrick, Nicole, Yahya, Willem, Temuera, Dolph, Ludi—for breathing life into our beloved characters. And, of course, this movie wouldn’t be what it is without the incredible achievement of everyone involved, from the heads of department to every single crew member, who demanded utmost excellence in helping design and create this cinematic experience.”

In addition to crossing the billion-dollar mark, this weekend “Aquaman,” at $1.02 billion and counting, is now the #2 DC film ever worldwide, behind only “The Dark Knight Rises,” which took in $1.08 billion in its run. “Aquaman” has taken in $287.9 million domestically, and is now also the 2nd highest grossing Warner Bros. film of all time internationally, with $732.4 million to date; the biggest DC film of all time internationally; and the highest grossing Warner Bros. film ever in China, with $287.3 million.

Very well put!
Imagine if someone cut together all the biggest action sequences from the last few decades of Hollywood, resulting in a mash of “Tron”, “Avatar”, “Clash Of The Titans”, “Superman”, “Jurassic Park”, and “Gladiator”. Imagine a film where an octopus gets a drum solo, and it isn’t among the top ten weirdest moments. Welcome to “Aquaman”, where you won’t have a clue what’s going on, but you won’t be able to look away either.
