I cropped the watched the trailer in 2.39 with VLC the other day and the it looked much much better.
You can tell in 1.78 that there is way too much room and empty space because it's not supposed to be in the frame, it also makes the digital image more obvious.

yeah, we framed for scope on set, so maybe it was a distribution thing...
