Brought back my DVD from LA and watched it the other day. Has anyone else seen it?

I tried but I gotta admit I turned it off after about 45 minutes. I had enough.

Let’s just say it’s not as good as the trailer would lead you to believe. I’ll leave it at that.

I prefer not to express myself publicly.

savagesketch wrote:The fact that it’s barely 80 minutes leads me to believe that the film had to be a tax write off of some kind.

You know, like with 95% European productions, there almost always is a small percentage of public financing aid in there (which you can see in the credits). But the system is very different than in the US.

Or better yet, they came in under budget on THE TRACKER, so they figured, “let’s just squeeze out another movie, what the hell?“

Those two (originally known THE STRANGER and FOUR TOWERS), Giorgio Serafini has been trying to make them for years (and completely rewrote the scripts it seems), and I think he said in a recent interview it took a lot of convincing to get Dolph to sign on, and of course they were putting MALEVOLENCE together to be shot and produced in Rome, and that's what Lundgren was working on while they were making HARD NIGHT FALLING...

(and it's probably DL who pulled the plug on MALEVOLENCE when according to him the Italian parties didn't come up with the budget, otherwise they would have probably gone forward to make it on the cheap)

No wonder, everything else Serafini has produced with Dolph (minus Blood of Redemption which was a decent story) has been garbage. I hope Dolph says no next time, sounds like he's getting there.

Just skipped through this on VOD. Couldn't watch it. Lasted 20 minutes and then flicked to the end.

Absolutely abhorrent. There's not one element of this that's good. Script, acting, action, editing, cinematography, digital FX. All the worst I've seen in Dolph's career.

Watching it I realised just how poor the shot coverage must have been. Some scenes lasting several minutes had 2 set-ups. Some scenes they didn't even use any lights and they looked grainy. Loads of shots out of focus because it's mostly handheld. Some of it even looks unscripted, there's bits where Dolph doesn't look like he knows what to say next. "CUT!" would have been more apt.

As for the action. Jeez. I've come to expect the digital muzzle flashes but you can't even see the sliders go back on the guns, the digital FX are beyond garbage, explosions are CGI and the fights are full of punches that they don't even manage to get in frame.

Honestly, Dolph needs to stay as far away from this mob as possible. It's actually somehow more irritating than The Tracker.

That's not a problem and can be a quality when you have more ambitions, better direction and writing.

One example is I had to cringe at the insisting (not to say gratuitous) crane shot on the two poor guys setting up the tables, tracking backward to show you the room. I'm all for nice looking establishing shots and elegant camera moves, but this seemed like "empty filling", and yet they were shooting in this nice castle that was barely shown and yet deserved to be shown off.

One thing I appreciate is that they paired Dolph with a wife who looks real and closer to his age, and an actress who seems serious and decent enough, not a slim and young Hollywood stereotype.

It's actually somehow more irritating than The Tracker.

Even though it's also dull, full of flaws and cringy aspects, I didn't hate THE TRACKER as much as some of you, I want to give it another watch to confirm but I guess the movie is somewhat "weird" enough for me to have a little bit of sympathy to it, I guess partly because of its European touch, or more especially what could have been a throwback to the '70S Italian "Poliziottesco", their exploitation "cop-action" flicks, its uncanny orchestral score that goes from "ethnic" (I don't like the word but can't find other" to electric guitar bits, and at least "some attempt/effort" to make it a more character/ensemble piece. (And a thumbs up for Dolph's short moment of tears). That said, there's too much I could say on what's wrong with it...

Posted by Giorgio Serafini on Facebook.

CURIOUS FACTS ABOUT THIS MOVIE:
1.) Only 41mn and 30sec were shot by the director credited in the titles;
2.) Less than 8 mn. of Dolph screen presence were shot by the director credited in the titles;
3.) More than 23mn. of Dolph screen presence were shot by someone else;
4.) A total of 37mn of the film were shot by someone else.

Ideally no minutes would have been shot by anybody.
