Hello Dolph-ins,

You cannot truly miss this.

My long-time website focused on the Universal Soldier saga, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren:

Universal Soldier (1992)
Universal Soldier: The Return (1999) - alternate continuity
Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2009)
Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (2012)

Everything about the timelines of the alternate worlds, the UniSol biotechnology, the characters and the stories.

The 6-minute making of featurette from 1992 was released in France on VHS to coincide with the promotion of NOWHERE TO RUN (and the rental video release of UNISOL) in April 1993. Back then seeing a "making of" was so rare (I remember buying a UK video of the T2 making of for the same price as movie)...

Rare, early (1990) stuff from the Andrew Davis version by the legendary conceptual artist and production designer Ron Cobb 8)

It also shows yet another draft of UNISOL was penned by Mike Gray and John Mason who also co-wrote Davis' CODE OF SILENCE and worked on the director's other project in various fashions...

Damn, looks like this one had more writers working on it than Showdown In Little Tokyo! What's the count so far Jox? Richard Rothstein and Christopher Leitch wrote "Crystal Knights" in 80's (1986 i believe i read around here...?), once Carolco started working on it in '89 or '90 Leslie Boham, Ross Lamanna and Andrew Davis, Phlippe Browning and Davis, and now Mike Gray and John Mason and Davis all worked on it before that early version was dropped and Dean Devlin wrote the final one. I'm still not sure about that John Milius rumor so i don't know should his supposed version be mentioned.

It really seems like this could have ended up going the same route as Carolco's many other cancelled projects (Isobar and Gale Force always come to my mind) which went through bunch of scripts before ultimately not getting made. I'm glad UniSol had better luck, because first film is a classic, and all official sequels were really fun, each in its own way.

And count the drafts written back to back by each of those writers...!

(The initial writers Richard Rothstein and Christopher Leitch had renamed it UNIVERSAL SOLDIER themselves.)

Regarding John Milius, I read about his involvement in two sources (one being an interview with JCVD), and the fact that Ron Cobb was a part of it perhaps isn't a coincidence.

You're absolutely right in saying this could have ended the route of another unproduced title for Carolco, which I think almost happened if they didn't tap Roland Emmerich to make it happen...
