Did you know that the song "Glory of Love" from THE KARATE KID PART II was actually recorded for ROCKY IV and passed on (same as "You're the Best" which was intended for ROCKY III first)?!

[Glad it didn't make it into the movie, that's even in THE KARATE KID II one of the weak points IMHO...]

At last! World premiere of original score from mega-hit fourth installment of wildly popular ROCKY saga, starring Sylvester Stallone as iconic boxer, with Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers - and formidable Russian opponent Dolph Lundgren. Original album featured songs plus two excerpts from score. Intrada release offers entire score by Vince DiCola, including his arrangement of classic "Theme from ROCKY" by Bill Conti. Unleashed at last is rich score, initially for keyboards, ultimately for large orchestra. Many highlights include haunting piano/cello theme for "Apollo's Death and Funeral", powerful "Up the Mountain" sequence, dynamic "Training Montage", powerhouse "War", epic "Knockout" for full orchestra. The 1985 sequel Rocky IV marked a new rhythm for the series, one that matched the glossy look and tightly-edited feel of the rock videos that were in vogue on MTV. This new tone would see Bill Conti’s traditional orchestral approach (Rocky I, II, and III) replaced by the driving, synth-heavy score of Vince DiCola. Rocky IV would become DiCola's first full-fledged composing assignment and yet he didn’t go so far as to reinvent the symphonic style Conti had established. DiCola developed the major musical conflict in his score—between the cold, Terminator-like electronics for Ivan Drago, and the warm, sympathetic orchestra of Rocky Balboa. “From the get-go of this project, Jeremy Lubbock (orchestrator) told me that he perceived the orchestra as being submissive to the synths, which he viewed as being the ‘meat and potatoes’ of the soundtrack. And we got that beefy, fat and colorful sound from using big modular synthesizers like The Moog, Emu and Oberheim," reflects DiCola. Familiar themes weave in and out of a new soundscape for Rocky IV, giving a new face to an old friend and providing a new, thrilling, aural experience. Just as Rocky Balboa was evolving over the course of the films, so was the music.

Received my CD, Vince DiCola says in the liner notes that the re-orchestrated "ROCKY theme" was recorded but ultimately wasn't used as it wasn't necessary as it was.

We also find out why the "Training Montage" and "War" tracks were different in the soundtrack album and the movie: DiCola started on the score way before the movie was complete and these were recorded prior to fit the album, then when the picture was locked, DiCola re-worked and re-recorded the cues to fit the editing perfectly...
