Just got back from it! Spoilers below.
On the whole I think the movie delivered. I laughed alot and the action packed a punch! And Dolph was awesome!!! A stand out. The most interesting character hands down.
Why he did not appear in the last main action sequence is a mystery. It would have been classic with him appearing out of nowhere, "back from the dead". You would think he was with the bad guys and then he saves Slys (or Jets) ass. When the big knife came through Eric Roberts I first thought it was him and then it was just Staham using Gunnars knife. What a shame.
But Dolph rocked! My friend who is not really a Dolph fan who I went with to the movie thought so too.
I agree on alot of the critisism that has been lifted about other characters being under developed. The expendables-team was kinda flat the bunch of them. Contrary to many others I actually liked Jet Li. Ok, he did not get a lot of space (why?) but the little thing about his family gave the character some heart. Which was lacking with Crews and Couture.
Austin was pure badass! Roberts was great but could have gotten more room as well. David Zayas as the general was good too. That was a good character; over the top, tragic and sentimental. Him standing up there in his tower cut off from the world was a nice theatrical image.
Gary Daniels also rocked. His final fight was the best in the movie. It took two exependables to put him down and he kept fighting with a knife in his back!
My main problem with the film was that Slys motivation for going back was not set up properly. It was all to vauge. It could easily have been avoided. Bad writing and storytelling really.
Everything was kinda underwritten/heavy edited. Sly clearly put story under action.
It may sound like I did not like the movie but that is not the case. It was a great ride with some flaws.
For the sequel I hope for a vendetta-like setup to make it more engaging. Kill off Crews and Couture in the intro and let the movie be about the rest of the team extracting revenge.
I could write an essay about this film so I am gonna stop now.
DOLPH OWNS!
