Lettich doesn't misunderstand these things and wouldn't say that if he didn't know for sure. I guess that's the corporate PR talk but and since Sly first makes his deals orally. So everybody know they are going to be in the movie but the deals have not exactly been signed (it's the same with Dolph who would hold off talking about US4 for a while, even for TE1 his publicist at the time wanted me to remove the info from this site after Sly had revealed publicly that he got Dolph)...

Like Lettich said afterwards: it's not a secret that it's been in talks but a deal hasn't been closed yet and he misunderstood thinking Van Damme was signed now.

Synopsis (subject to change):

The Expendables are back and this time it's personal! After Tool (Mickey Rourke), the heart and soul of the Expendables, is brutally murdered on a mission, his comrades swear to avenge him. Excellent news! Well, I would have preferred Tool to stay around, but atleast his death will serve the story. The thing about a captured woman and a dictator sounds very much like the first movie, but I don't mind. The story should be kept simple in this kind of movie, keeping the focus on the action and the characters.

And the teaser posters look good as well, especially the tagline: "They're all back." Hopefully it's true and they'll all be back.

I wouldn't take this storyline for granted too seriously until we get more confirmation, it may be an old one that Nu Image put up or it can still change. Such as it's kind of like with ROCKY IV were people having seen the trailer or read the plot knew that Apollo Creed was getting killed.

"They're all back"? Isn't that a bit premature? I was under the impression that Jet Li might not return. And has Mickey Rourke even said anything about coming back?

If the synopsis is true, that's a bit disappointing. I figure Tool could be someone who died in the sequel, but rather he'd be someone who sacrificed his own life at the end to save the team.

If anything, Toll Road needs to die in the sequel just so they can get rid of Randy Couture.

Anyone hear anything about the rumor that the sequel would be more martial arts-oriented?

I had a feeling that this would be the direction the sequel would take... the team out to avenge the death of one of their own. But to be honest, I didn't think it'd be Tool. I actually thought it'd be either Toll Road or Crews' Caesar... I think Jet Li will be MIA this go round though. Things are buzzing that JCVD will also be involved... perhaps as a villain. Everything's still in the rumor stage, so who knows what's all in store...

Yeah another dictator on another silly island/remote location would be lame city... I was getting pumped for a run in with some Mexican drug lords, but it looks like that idea was scratched.

With the state of the world right now there are about a dozen places the sequel could easily take place in... I really hope they do something special this time around... the first film was great for pure entertainment purposes but the story/setting were weak as all get out. I wan't more grit/realism this time around!!

Thank god. This is an interesting link I thought I'd post which basically talks about Arnie's comeback and quotes a hollywood exec about how all our fav. aging action heroes are still bankable! More positive press for guys like Arnie/Sly/Bruce and of course our man DL!!

There are some more intresting gossip (no facts yet) that after starting work on Headshot next month with Sly that Thomas Jane could yet get involved with TE2. All we would then need would be for Ray Stevenson to land a samll part then we can have a full on Punisher match up!

By the way Li's name is missing so even it doesn't mean much at this point it's safer now to assume he's not likely to return.

I know he hasn't been in anything in a while, but I'm interested as to why Sly hasn't called up Hulk Hogan and asked him if he wanted a part... the man did a few mildly entertaining films back in the 90's and also had a funny cameo in Rocky 3.
