In this case, however, I can assure you that with the Extended Cut of The Expendables almost everything was done right. To the full delight of the author of this report the work that was put into it was more than worth it.
MORE Dolph Lundgren. Furthermore, scenes with him that were already in the theatrical cut have been re-edited and almost exclusively to his advantage. In the Extended Cut his character Gunner Jensen is for example less “demonized”, which makes his change of attitude at the end of the movie more plausible. Also his fight with Jet Lee, whose key points were vigorously critizised, now opens with the necessary calm before the storm. The editing is also better. This does not reinvent the whole situation, but it makes the most of it. Similar is true for the showdown, although the nature of the flaws was different there.
Things like the new score for the final shootout are more or less a matter of taste.
Overall, however, the Extended Cut is clearly the better of the two versions.
It is nevertheless self-explanatory that not all the flaws of the theatrical cut were smoothed out. For that a) more and b) other material would have been needed. There is no miraculous revelation of character depth, which probably also does not belong in such a movie. That being said, the new version offers more material exactly where it was needed. Moreover, the sequencing, focus and editing have been improved.
