Let's wait for an official announcement of the special features, as for EX2 they might have put these a little early...

Vern's review

And you know me, I love that he does all this experimenting in genuine balls-to-the-wall action movies. Some people have been turned off by the movie’s deliberate pace and its atmosphere-and-character-driven start, not to mention its allegedly confusing story (I don’t really agree with that description – it’s a mystery what’s going on, then you find out). Some, not yet won over by Adkins’ body of work, are upset that Van Damme and Lundgren aren’t in it that much. For those people I have great news: Just in the last 5 years Dolph has had the starring role in 5 movies you could watch, Jean-Claude in 4, each with several more on the way. You will technically get more screen time with them, and the stories and characters will be exactly what you expect, no more, probly less, just like you demand. You will not be asked to puzzle anything together, you will not be left with questions, everything will be fine.

The sacrifice you make though is that the action in this one is way better than in THE KILLING MACHINE, COMMAND PERFORMANCE, DIRECT CONTACT and ASSASSINATION GAMES. This reminds me of the lady that wanted to sue DRIVE for not having enough car races. I don’t know why people prefer the standard noisy, poorly done action to long, intense, brilliantly done scenes that have some build up to them first. No, DAY OF RECKONING doesn’t have cars exploding in every scene, but you gotta be crazy to think it’s skimping on the goods. There’s a shockingly brutal whorehouse shootout between zombie super soldiers, a thrilling one-man siege on a military compound done as if in one shot, a TERMINATOR style car chase/shootout, and face offs in every combination you want from this set of actors: Arlovski vs. Lundgren, Arlovski vs. Adkins, Adkins vs. Lundgren, Adkins vs. Van Damme. (Van Damme already fought Lundgren and Arlovski in the last one.)

Arrow In The Head review
http://ftp.joblo.com/horror-movies/revi ... -reckoning
• "UNIVERSAL SOLDIER DAY OF RECKONING played out like a Cannon movie directed by Stanley Kubrick or/and David Lynch."

• "If I get more GENIUS like this, I am IN!"

• "Dolph Lundgren partied hard with the role once more (...). You can never get enough Dolph, and the film came to life even further when he surfaced onscreen. "

• "I expected “pretty good” and what I got was “holy shit awesome”!"

Scott Adkins interview on IMPACT

Impact: What's your quick pitch description of the film to a potential viewer?

SA: Universal Soldier on acid.

IMPACT review

So, yes...this is not your mother's Universal Soldier movie. This is more like your wicked Uncle Ernie's dark and twisted Universal Soldier movie, its as if David Cronenberg directed a martial arts take on Apocalypse Now, and confirms just how good a director John Hyams is becoming. The somewhat light-hearted tone of the original Universal Soldier is dead and buried, this film takes place in a nihilistic North America where the government is trying to assert control over the population.

The film gets the bloody thumbs up from Impact and finally confirms Hyams as a director to watch. Adkins is crowned the new action hero and Lundgren and specially Jean-Claude prove they still have so much to offer, with Van Damme...

Long live the new flesh...

And the good news of the day:
UNISOL: DOR has been selected (off competition) at the Paris International Fantastic Film festival and will be screened November 21 at 10pm!!! 8)

Wether they are funny, mean or else, I always thought meme were a good thermometer of popularity (and wit the "Duh" and other memes made with UniSol 4, the movie seems to be quite popular across the web ;) ).

Finally caught this in Malaysia. It really didn't disappoint. If Kubrick, Cronenberg, Lynch, Verhoeven, Scott and Coppolla joined forces to make an existential martial arts action horror, the result would be this. Seriously well made film with a lot of nice touches. I thought they'd play the uncut version out in Asia, but I think it's probably the theatrical cut, but still it's very violent.
Adkins impressed the hell out of me. I think he's really going places. He's got acting talent, and finally added more presence too. JC was this creepy ghoul and it worked really well. Dolph's role was once again good, but I think Sgt Scott has runs his course now. Same with Devreaux, it's time to either re-invent the franchise with Adkins or leave it alone.
The action is great and the whole tone of the film feels nightmarish. Hyams really hasn't just made a good action film, he's actually crafted an intelligent film. A lot of thought and consideration has gone into this, from the scripting to the style, to the shooting and editing. There's nothing that's not meticulously thought out and delivered. I mean the film just reminded me so much at times of things like Videodrome, Mulhullond Drive, Blue Velvet, The Shining, The Thing. Not just in terms of plot but stylistically in the way scenes were lit, or shots played out. A Universal Soldier film shouldn't be like this. It shouldn't be this well constructed but it is. Hyams should be one of the next big things.
I think too, this will be repeatable too. I don't think of all three stars, JC, Dolph and Adkins, any of their films has been as artistically classy as this, nor challenging. Reviews would go along with that too. It's a toss up between this and JCVD as the most left of field, impressive film of all three stars' CV's.

What's up with shitty IMDB by the way? Typically bad ratings for "DTV" even when it's good. Then they overrate the hell out of anything released in the last 10 years, wide in cinemas. The ridiculous top 250 says it all.

UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: DAY OF RECKONING (John Hyams, 2012)

Well said, Tom! Although I wouldn't go so far to compare this to Verhoeven's or Cronenberg's work. Well, maybe a a little. ;) The first person view in the beginning is a very nice idea.
