I also hoped it would be more packed (especially since I gave them enough to at least add an extensive gallery of foreign lobby cards and such which is pretty inexpensive). But then again just like with RED SCORPION, PUNISHER and JOSHUA TREE, I had never hoped we would get a Blu-ray with extras so, that's still good though, and the trio of Baxley, Lundgren and Benben should be fairly entertaining and interesting enough!
I only spoke with the initial writer by email, he told me the genesis of the project (which he did on spec but was much different and called LETHAL CONTACT) until they brought in David Koepp (JURASSIC PARK, STIR OF ECHOES etc) and his partner to rewrite it (Baxley also did a pass on the script later).
I spoke to Baxley too (even the DP and Jay Bilas) who had very fond memories of it, it's been a while since I listened to the interview but, it's not that "he wanted" Dolph to play the villain, he "thought" Dolph was already cast as such when he got on board but soon found out he wasn't... So I don't think he had time to think of another Caine.
Trivia:
Then he tried to find a find Dolph a sidekick with a counterpoint personality and found Brian Benben, instead of the producers suggestion of Chris Penn.
But the year before, Baxley and Lundgren had another project going that called MAN TO MAN where Dolph was to star as an alien (hitchhiking the desert and ending up in Vegas with a repo man). It would have been shot right after RED SCORPION but the plug was pulled only days before filming by Bernie Brillstein (GHOSTBUSTERS) who had a fight regarding casting with the other producer who was none other than Joel Silver (same team as ACTION JACKSON).
P.S.
Interestingly Baxley had initially hired the DP of LIQUID SKY, an independent / experimental movie with a similar premise, to shoot the film...
And thanks to his father they got Richard Portman, from THE GODFATHER and STAR WARS, to do the entire sound mix (dialogue, music and effects) by himself (instead of three different people).
Baxley didn't like the U.S. re-title to I COME IN PEACE and thought at the time it was a mistake.
But he's great stuff to say about the movie so his interview on the Blu-ray should be good.
