J.R. Martinez's stars in new seriers

J.R. Martinez’s rise to fame in the past five years has been a meteoric one. The Iraq Army veteran answered an open casting call for ABC’s “All My Children” and since landing the role of ‘Brot Monroe’ he has not looked back. He went on to win season 13 of Dancing with the Stars, published his first book, Full of Heart My Story of Survival, Strength and Spirit, which debuted on the New York Times Best Sellers list, to becoming a highly sought after motivational speaker, to now starring in the new series SAF3 for Emmett Furla Productions and Rescue 3 Productions UK Ltd.. The show will premiere on the Tribune stations Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22. In Chicago it will be WGN at 1:00 PM/CT on Saturday, September 21. In New York it will be WPIX at 5:00 PM/ET on Sunday, September 22.

J.R. portrays ‘Alfonso Rivera,’ a Los Angelesparamedic firefighter and a member of the U.S. Air Force Pararescue team with previous assignments in Iraq and Afghanistan. ‘Alfonso’, like J.R., always finds the positive in any situation, is passionate about his work and someone you can always count on.

J.R.’s castmates include Dolph Lundgren, LydiaHull, Texas Battle, Danielle Anderson, Katie Meehan, Travis Burns and Jocelyn Osorio.

SAF3 (pronounced SAFE) is about an elite division of the Malibu Fire Department consisting of the best of the best in their respective fields of sea, air and fire. They are the heroes who answer the most challenging calls. Specialists who collaborate, coordinate and initiate daring rescues in the most dangerous venues to save human life. Each episode will center on big action rescues as well as camaraderie and friendship. The series is being shot on location in Cape Town, South Africa and is being brought to the television audience by some of the same production team that brought us Baywatch, including Executive Producer, Gregory J. Bonann. Bonann, a long time lifeguard/firefighter, co-created Baywatch and was a part of the team for the 12 year, 289 episode run.

J.R. will travel back and forth to the U.S. to continue the successful motivational speaking arm of his career.

He also guests on the Sesame Street episode entitled “Leela’s Cell Phone Addiction” in a segment with Elmo, “Feelings” which will air on PBS stations October 17, 2013.

J.R. was injured in April 2003 when his Humvee hit a road side bomb. He suffered smoke inhalation and severe burns to 34% of his body. He spent 34 months at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas and had 33 surgeries. His experiences counseling others recovering from their injuries there led him to his motivational speaking career.

He is a talk show favorite having guested on OPRAH, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Ellen, Katie Couric, Dr. OZ, Good Morning America, The View, Geraldo Rivera and Neil Cavuto to name a few.

J.R. has received many honors, among them: 2012 Tournament of Roses Grand Marshal, the 2013 9th Annual National Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshal, featured in People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive and 25 Most Intriguing People of 2011 issues and the 2012 National Red Cross Spirit Award.

Yup, just what I figured... Syndicated show that airs on Saturday or Sunday afternoons, similar to HERCULES, XENA, NIGHTMAN, CLEOPATRA 2020, and all those other action-oriented programs. I dunno if those other examples are any indication of the show's quality... A weekend afternoon airing doesn't exactly sell me on the show. Even dreck like CSI, Chicago Fire, and NCIS get a solid network and an evening air time...

Don't even need to when you know the show-runner producer is behind BAYWATCH, was a lifeguard himself and almost all his show projects run around it and the chicks are babes in swimsuit of course...

'Scuse me, it was actually titled CLEOPATRA 2525, a science-fiction extravaganza that was the epitome of quality... Surprisingly lasted two seasons, which really isn't saying much since it was syndicated and all. It aired back to back with another afternoon action "gem," JACK OF ALL TRADES starring Bruce Campbell. SAF3's creator was also behind BAYWATCH, which you guessed it... syndication.

I thought we were past these schlocky weekend shows. Guess one is making a comeback somewhat... Whatever happened to just airing movies throughout the day?

They made it clear last year the series was to bring back these kind of syndicated shows
Indeed, Rescue 3 is a throwback to old times, when action-adventure series like Baywatch, Xena, Hercules and Andromeda heated up the syndication market. There have been no new entries in the genre since the end of Legend Of The Seeker two years ago. Tribune has been adventures with its pickups recently; the station group also is behind a new late-night talk show starring Arsenio Hall, also a genre that had disappeared from syndication.

Seems these two guys from "All My Children" and "The Bold and the Beautiful" might an audience too

I think we're gonna be taping into the average TV viewers here, no film or HBO TV series buffs... Sad when I just saw one of the most gripping and beautifully shot mini-series, "Top Of The Lake" (from Jane Campion), I guess I'm not gonna get that type of visceral experience with SAF3...

What is a shame is that there are so many shows on the air right now that Lundgren would fit perfectly on. Strike Back, Banshee, and Sons of Anarchy to name a few. This thing is gonna be so cookie-cutter and pedestrian.

Oh well at least it's not really interfering with him making movies. Not sure how they're filming this series while Lundgren is doing EX3 but I'm guessing they have enough soap opera reject actors to carry the show in his absence.

ACTION TV SERIES, SAF3 TO BE FILMED ON CAMPS BAY BEACH
21/08/13
Image
The structure currently being built on Camps Bay beach is a bungalow for the new television series SAF3. Starring Dolph Lundgren,J.R. Martinez and Lydia Hull.

SAF3 smallIt is an action adventure series with no violence and heaps of romance with no sex.
The makers of the TV series were looking at shooting in countries like Hawaii and Australia but obviously Camps Bay was the location of choice.

After four months of planning, construction of the bungalow started on the 22nd of July and will be completed on the 6th of September. Filming starts on 7 September 2013. The planned completion date for filming is at the end of November. So far 20 episodes are planned and will be shot in and around Cape Town.

They will be spending R160 million and creating 2000 jobs. The base camp is at Maiden’s Cove, near the border of Camps Bay towards Clifton. There will be no restricted access to the beach while filming.

Filming on Camps Bay beach will take place twice a week and no later than 22:30.

Leftover food will be taken to the Haven Night Shelter and no food will be given to the homeless people in Camps Bay.

The beach bungalow being built is located between the traffic lights in Camps Bay Village and the public toilets on the beach. It is built out of wood and environmentally friendly, it is only assembled on the beach and built elsewhere. When filming is completed, the beach bungalow will be packed up and moved away. It sounds like the most idyllic holiday home, complete with a jacuzzi on the patio.

There will be a life guard tower on stilts which the Camps Bay life guards can use when they are not filming. It has a better structure then the current life guard tower with 360 degree views.

There will be 24 hour security. Trained life guards and medics will be on duty while shooting is taking place on the beach. They will be working close with the NSRI.

There are information boards up around Camps Bay if anyone has any questions.

I don't know if these R160 million is the exact budget for the whole show but would be about $15 million hence half of what was announced if the figure is accurate.

#liquidvinyl #matteblack transformation for this Fiat used in the shooting of #SAF3 being shot in Cape Town at the moment

Cape Town ‘prettier’ than Malibu says Baywatch producer

20.08.2013

Cape Town is not only doubling as Malibu for the filming of the action adventure series SAF (Sea Air Fire) 3 which has action star Dolph Lundgren as it main protagonist, the producer believes it’s prettier.

The series, produced by Gregory Bonann, focuses on the drama and adventure surrounding an elite division of California’s Malibu Fire Department.

Shooting for the series begun two weeks ago in Cape Town, providing 200 local jobs and injecting R160m into the local economy.

“The people of Cape Town have been just amazing, said Bonann yesterday. (subs: Tues)

“The city, the people…have exceeded our expectations in all forms. The level of experience, skill and talent – along with such a scope of beautiful locations – it’s just a winning combination.”

Bonnan, who was involved in the creation of Baywatch, said Cape Town was “gorgeous” and “prettier” than Malibu.

He said the series focused on the SAF 3 team who were heroes answering “the most challenging calls” and viewers could expect to see “daring rescues” in dangerous situations as the team tried to save lives.

He said each episode centered on big-action rescues as well as the camaraderie and friendship in the elite rescue team.

Cape Town Film Commission CEO Denis Lille said the production team had 103 days of filming this season lined up, to create 20 episodes.

The principal location was Camps Bay beach where a semi permanent set has been built.

Other locations included Tokai forest and Maidens Cove

The series will be aired on Etv later this year. — Peter Luhanga

103 days for 20 episodes means about 5 days per episode.
