Box Office: 'Expendables 3' Opens to $875K Thursday Night
Lionsgate and Millennium Film's The Expendables 3 opened to a muted $875,000 Thursday night from more than 2,200 locations, on par with the $870,000 earned by The Expendables and ahead of the $685,000 grossed by the sequel. However, both those films didn't open until midnight, while the threequel rolled out at 7 p.m.

Expendables 3, featuring a multigenerational lineup of action stars, is expected to take in $20 million to $25 million for the weekend, a series low. In addition to potential franchise fatigue, a pristine copy of the film leaked on the Internet is likely to hurt grosses, much as what happened when The Wolverine was pirated before its release.

“Expendables 3″ bowed Thursday in over 2200 locations and will expand Friday to 3,221 theaters.

Box Office Friday: ‘Turtles’ And ‘Guardians’ Lead; ‘Expendables,’ ‘Let’s Be Cops’ Off Target In Soft Weekend For Newcomers
Millennium/Lionsgates’ Expendables 3 is opening lower than any previous of its installments on a Friday night with an expected take of only $6M (or a tad less) — that’s a 40% decline from Expendables 2′s Friday opening and about a 54% decline from the first Expendables Friday. This third installment, which went all PG-13 on its fans, is likely to only bring in $16M+ for the three-day weekend; let’s hope it gets a shot in the arm from its international rollout as this is one tired franchise in the U.S. The word tanking comes to mind. Not sure how much of its total gross is impacted by the 5M or so illegal downloads but it might really affect the international gross.

Enjoyed it overall but it's easily the weakest in the series. It's fine if they want to inject some youth into the cast but why did they have to utilize 4 of the lamest "actors" you're likely to see in a motion picture?

Gibson was a grand villain. Snipes was a welcome addition. Banderas was hit and miss.

Stinks that Lundgren was such a background player in this one. Knew it was gonna happen with all the new cast additions. Rough to see it play out that way.

Guess this is the end of the series as a theatrical franchise. I'm betting at some point a DTV/VOD entry will be made, might actually be a chance for Lundgren to get far more focus.

The weak box office doesn't surprise me. Even without the illegal downloading and the young cast issue, I think it was probably on the cards. The franchise has turned into one of those "wait for netflix" films really. It just doesn't interest people any more and it was always going to struggle attracting a younger audience. Many avoided out of spite toward the PG 13 rating.

However it's all a result of Avi Lerner having no kind of quality control. No standards. He's a cheapskate. DTV CGI in big blockbuster theatrical films. He doesn't care. He just wants it made and released. If you'd give the franchise to someone like Paramount, who've done a lot of Marvel stuff, they'd treat it better, but of course, they'd not touch a franchise like this at all.

I enjoyed the third film, in the mindset that it's going to be more of the same. Just a laugh. Easy entertainment. No plot, no logic, no characterisation, just badassess blowing shit up.

I really dug Gibson though. His first face to face scene with Sly, I felt was the best scene in the whole trilogy.

I think they'll try once more on the big screen. I'd imagine more solid box office options like Vin Diesel, Rock and Liam Neeson will be the ones approached. Guys who can sell tickets. Not one name in the Expendables has a good track record of late on the big screen.

Hard to picture Lionsgate investing the advertising for another theatrical release. Harder to picture Diesel, The Rock, or Neeson lending their name to a franchise that is in massive decline. In an age where the movie star concept is dying Neeson is still one of the most bankable names going.

A $10 million DTV/VOD flick is what I'd want. Let Stallone and Statham go about their way. Have Lundgren, Crews, and Couture (just for familiarity sake) headline. Let a Florentine or Hyams direct. Throw in some cheaper new additions like a Ron Perlman, Kane Kosugi or Marko Zaror.

That's my preference, anyway.

Ida's really grown up since appearing with Poppa Dolph in "Command Performance". She played the older daughter of the Russian President in the movie.

Have not seen it yet but I kind of expected it to flop. I get the impression they didn't care about quality on this film and none of these guys are big box office draws and the younger cast are even less of a draw. I do think it was smart to cast Ronda though.

Ex3 is boring, bloodless, poor paced, it has some pathethic CGI, not enough action, young expendables are unnecessary and I cant imagine anyone could give a flying F about them. Oh, and Dolph is barely in it. One of the biggest mistakes - it's like EVERYONE vs Gibson. They should have put some recognizable names on Mel's side, but no, he has no recognizable henchmans, just cannon fodder.

Waste of time, waste of money, easily worst in the series. Let it flop & die. I am not interested in Ex4 anymore.

They cared, but about the wrong things and the wrong choices. Sly's only pushes himself when he's got something to prove or hit rock bottom, if EX1 didn't do so well we might still have something where he puts his guts and artistic sensibility on the line (and certainly something with more soul and depth like EX1 or the latest RAMBO)... It's not even the PG-13 rating that hurts the film (that's not a reason for a good or bad film PG13 or R and in this case there's so many other wrong or tasteless things distracting you). Sly even admitted himself recently in one interview (can't remember which) that this wasn't his personal taste... trying too hard to please and ultimately not pleasing anybody.

Gieferg wrote:enough action

And yet they shot so much of it. But tried so hard to make it an epileptic fast-paced flick like a Bay movie that the whole movie feels like it's playing on "fast forward" and they again seem to have cut so much out of it for no apparent reason.
