He certainly had the necessary look for the roles that went to the likes of Schwarzenegger, Stallone, etc. Unfortunately, as has been discussed here, his projects that followed his rise to fame in ROCKY IV were all plagued with production problems, i.e. MOTU, RED SCORPION, and THE PUNISHER. And recovering from those was difficult, hence his relegation to the DTV market. By the time, DARK ANGEL came around, which on its own, was a typical 90's action flick with a modest budget, it was a little late.

As a side note, I was always amazed at the hate MOTU seems to get. It did its best to provide legitimacy to a toyline. No one could have done any better. And picking on Dolph for the role of He-Man never made sense to me either. Sure, his English was still a little broken, but look at Golan-Globas' way of thinking... They needed a star for the role of He-Man. They needed someone blonde and with a physique. At the time, Dolph was the only and best choice.

By the time, DARK ANGEL came around, which on its own, was a typical 90's action flick with a modest budget, it was a little late. .

And even for this the problem was they didn't push it, like RED SCORPION it was released in 1,200 screens in America which was quite big back then, but there was no publicity whatsoever to support it because they didn't have the money for it. They all made a killing on video supposedly, although we never saw those numbers.

He certainly had the necessary look for the roles that went to the likes of Schwarzenegger, Stallone, etc.

Funnily but not surprisingly, one of his aborted projects, Craig Baxley's MAN TO MAN, to be produced by Joel Silver, was tailored and initially set to star Arnold, who back out because he was asking way too much money (this was right after PREDATOR came out). And another famous project of his also almost got made with Arnold early on (I keep this scoop for later).

Exactly, and the movie really isn't that bad, on the contrary, there are far worse 80's movies, and MOTU isn't one of them, but it's an easy target for mocking I guess. By the way, Lundgren was cast by Edward Pressman (big time producer and the actual man behind the movie), a little before Cannon was
involved (few people realize Cannon came on board pretty late whereas Pressman developed the project long before and went to the other major studios -and RKO/Warner who backed out last minute- who all declined the project, before Golan signed for it.

Love to see him embrace the role now, as opposed to feeling embarrassed about it like he did for so many years. Perhaps it's this newfound love of nostalgia that's turned him around... Either way, this was the role that made me (and I imagine so many others) big fans of the big guy!

I don't think he's turned around, there's always been a double side to it (fans always want to see things black and white like he has to either embrasse it or hate it) it depends of the context. But a sure thing is that most of his present and lasting fans are from the He-Man generation (either it's because of the MOTU movie or they're the age you had to be to see it back then)...

But you started with the big boys, "your He-Man" being this tortured "dark angel of vengeance" blowing off mafiosi and yakuzas after his family was killed by the mob...
