That quote has been way overused (who knows the context and his mood when he said it this way) and yes, that was when he only had a few films under his belt. Remember he didn't want to do it initially (the Hollywood establishment didn't want to make either). Overall how he sees it or talks about it varies, it's not black or white.

Even still though, I've gotta wonder... What is his current state of mind in completing projects like this???

I think he sees it as a challenge and likes being in a comedy, seems to have enjoyed making it and working with Don Michael Paul as well. But it's quite likely in six months he's not gonna want hear about it.

Perhaps, but it has never been a role that D has held in the highest regard, despite it being one of his most popular and memorable. He's also been quoted as saying that he "felt stupid" doing the role. Add to the fact that he had tons of stress off set as well, I can imagine that this was not a pleasant experience.

Still though, I know he's looking at the positives the role brings, i.e. acting in a comedy, etc. But his headspace doing a project like this in comparison to something like MOTU I imagine has gotta be similar. Thankfully, I don't see this one having the longevity and cult status of MOTU. Luckily this is going to come and go.

Oh for sure, I was mostly discussing the "lowest point of his career" part.
(and indeed MOTU was no picnic, not mentioning or him I think these times also mean troubles with a manager who screw him over and stole some money from him or something, and other personal issues to overcome like his newly found celebrity and so on).

To be completely honest and candid from what I've seen of him in real life, he's kind of has a low self-esteem personality and sometimes you feel he's kind of embarassed of all his resume and to be making action movies (or the kinds he generally does) for a living.

On the other hand he's also having fun (as much as you can have aside from all the hassle coming from the business and the reality of making movies).

EW got the exclusive:

DVD & VOD release in the US on May 17th with deleted scenes, gag reel, and a featurette (Kindergaten Cop 2: Under Cover).

Seems they dropped the "Kindergarten Cop: A New Day" alternate title by the way.

Well that looks as terrible as expected and Dolph looks kind of painfully uncomfortable.

Eh, looks like what you'd expect. A cookie cutter DTV sequel that will probably be a loose remake of the first one. I guess it'll be like the Home Alone DTV sequels, or the Beethoven sequels.

I'll take out of the left field movies like this any day over the "3-day gig playing a cop in a Giorgio Serafini movie"-type roles though.

Hard to tell from a 30 sec "trailer", it seems he's in between uncomfortable (script re-using every beat from from the first one?) and letting loose of his charismatique personality and smile... Sure it's not like we've been waiting for this (then again none of the past titles have been anticipated this one with LARCENY and DON'T KILL IT cool well be the best of the bunch).

Even the very serious left wing Libération (kind of French New York Times I guess) posted about it:

Even though it's a comedy, I'm kinda down with this. Dolph looks happy for the first time in a while, he's not totally phoning it in and production value wise (everything right down to the lighting) looks a million times better than stuff like Riot (despite it being enjoyable). If Dolph could secure a couple more DTVs from Universal, even belated sequels to unrelated movies, I'd be happy.

We'll see but the HARD TARGET one could have been fun. I'm not down for a JARHEAD kind of thing though. What else Universal owns? I hope they don't get him for JINGLE ALL THE WAY 3!

Yeah the Hard Target one was at the back of my mind when I mentioned Universal. I guess they have stuff like Timecop and I'm pretty sure they've helmed the Death Race DTV sequels. It'd be interesting to see though, I'm sure in their back catalogue there is potential, and something like Kindergarten Cop 2 will automatically draw more attention and the 'holy shit' look from people in DVD stores as opposed to something more generic.

Probably helps that he enjoys playing an educator. That's part of the reason he took 'Detention' years ago, iirc an interview I saw way back then.

Of course THIS is getting a ton more of media coverage than any other DL vehicle could no matter how good.
