Let the fireworks begin.
The long July 4th holiday weekend is turning into a bonanza for Hollywood as Minions: The Rise of Gru heads for huge four-day opening of $129.2 million domestically, according to early estimates. That includes $109.5 million for the three days.
Globally, the movie will jump the $200 million mark sometime on Sunday.
Forget about breaking pandemic-era records for a family title; the Illumination and Universal movie will boast one of the top starts ever at the domestic box office for an animated Hollywood tentpole, not adjusted for inflation.
Friday’s haul alone was around $48 million from 4,400 theaters, including a hefty $10.8 million in previews.
Minions 2 came in No. 2 in its second weekend with $45.6 million for a domestic total of $210.1 million and $399.9 [worldwide], already making it the most successful family title since the COVID-19 crisis struck.

“I was excited about the role because the Despicable Me and Minions franchises have such charming and memorable characters and stories,” Lawless says. “And on top of that, I had the opportunity to work in the same film as Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren. My 16-year-old self told me I had to do it!”
