Really? I thought he looked the same as usual... very funny at times, but I agree it was a good interview.. he's always so nice/funny... it's a shame that he can't get spot of one of the late night shows like Conan/Letterman I think he'd kill it if he was invited on.

Very good and personal interviews. Did you also watch the Stallone interview in the second clip? Almost sad to hear the part about Copland. Did the audience really not want to see Sly like that? I always read that people were so impressed that he actually can act very well in a dramatic movie. I think the same. I loved his role in Copland (as well as Rambo, Rocky and all the other action roles, of course). The main audience didn't?

Copland did ok box office wise in the US, Stallone's star was already fading by that point in his career. I personally never enjoyed his performance in it, he's basically a fat turtle. Everyone else in the film is amped up and intense. Then there's Stallone, plodding along silently. If he would have just played a passionate man who had to rely on his brains instead of his brawn, I'm sure audiences would've responded. Gregory Peck wasn't a tough guy but he came across with dignity, nobility and respect, that's what made him strong. Stallone just got fat and let the other characters run circles around him. Playing sad shouldn't be mistaken for "dramatic".

I agree to disagree on that. I love his role and performance in COPLAND, it's subtle and yes, "sad" with a great pay-off. And it has nothing to do with just "getting fat". I think those who are playing over the top in the film are the others from the cast (De Niro, Keitel pretty much being their usual selves).

I disagree to disagree on that. (I agree) Sly is great in Copland and I think the performance is related to Rocky in a lot of ways. He's great at playing those downtrodden, sad characters.

I have heard him claim that Copland almost ruined his career before, because people stopped seeing him as an action hero. I have no idea how true that is.

I head him say that too but he's not fair no anyone here. First I remember when it came out (in France that is) that it gave him some "come back" as far taking him seriously as an acclaimed actor (let's not forget he was a character actor before becoming an action hero) and gave him critical praise. And as far as I know that was his goal doing this movie because he was tired of being typecast as a dumb Rambo. So when he's a super action star he's not happy because he wants to be taken seriously and when he's taking good roles in smaller movies (with a great cast btw) he's pissed because he didn't gross much or didn't earn him an Oscar (which is what he really wanted I think hence his badmouthing now)... COP LAND is one of the best things he's done IMO and he should be grateful to have been part of it because it's one of those rare realistic contemporary pieces that could fit guys like him or Dolph while both giving them more substance and still deliver as "manly men" (the climax is one of the greatest scenes I've seen in the genre because it's such a counterpoint).

We're getting way OFF TOPIC here...!

Indeed. What amazed me was that he played so absolutely against his usual characters. That sad part especially. He was quiet, sad, fat with hanging shoulders... 180 degrees the opposite of all the other roles. And he really touched my heart with that role. Frankly I wouldn't have thought that he'd have acting skills like that because usually, while he's really good at his roles, he plays the same guy again and again.

Jox, I guess that's why Sly is so successful. The secret of the big stars and business hot shots: They are never satisfied with what they have so they go on and on and on.

Have you ever watched his earlier roles not just the first ROCKY but FIST, CAPONE, PARADISE ALLEY, LORDS OF FLATBUSH etc? Sly was actually thought to become the next Brando. As I said he was a "character actor" with serious acting training before becoming a muscled action star but most people forget that.

I must admit that I haven't. I heard that he was in a porn movie before. ;-) And I watched one early piece where he played a terrorist, I think. I don't remember that much, that was decades ago. Edit: Checking his filmography I think that was "No Place to Hide".

Jox, tell him not to support Everton, it has to be Arsenal (he used to live in London).
