Did the audience really not want to see Sly like that? I always read that people were so impressed that he actually can act very well in a dramatic movie. I think the same. I loved his role in Copland (as well as Rambo, Rocky and all the other action roles, of course). The main audience didn't?
Copland did ok box office wise in the US, Stallone's star was already fading by that point in his career. I personally never enjoyed his performance in it, he's basically a fat turtle. Everyone else in the film is amped up and intense. Then there's Stallone, plodding along silently. If he would have just played a passionate man who had to rely on his brains instead of his brawn, I'm sure audiences would've responded. Gregory Peck wasn't a tough guy but he came across with dignity, nobility and respect, that's what made him strong. Stallone just got fat and let the other characters run circles around him. Playing sad shouldn't be mistaken for "dramatic".
