As for Expendables 3, we got some young blood as the director, a very good Australian director called Patrick Hughes. So it’s back in L.A.. being edited. The first cut is four hours long. I told them, ‘Don’t touch a frame!’ (Laughs)

I'm assuming that's the work print, which just about every movie has. The movie Alien has a four hour work print cut too, available somewhere in the internet, it's lots of static shots. That's probably a two hour movie realistically when you cut all the useless fat.

Exactly.

“[Jason Statham and I] have just a great rapport together. Very often he is very straight, but when he smiles and jokes around he’s good. You might make it in this business, pal. Keep smiling.”

I just realized that the DP, Peter Menzies Jr, lit the great John McTiernan's 13TH WARRIOR. Not too shabby... 8)

I enjoyed 13th warrior for what it tried to be... but man was that film too dark for most of the fight scenes... I don't think that will be an issue here but 13th needed more light when the bear people attacked the norse village!

I think it was on purpose for the most part, and that McTiernan wanted to use natural lighting (as in non electric sources) as much as he could. I don't know if he had anything to do with the prints color timing/grading, as Michael Crichton more than largely took over the film from him, re-shooting and re-editing a lot of it... Anyway. Back to topic, Menzies also did DIE HARD 3 with McT, and more recently KILLING SEASON with Travolta and De NIro.

Here's a poster someone put together using the heads of comedic actors and put them on the bodies of the cast of The Expendables.

I think a better title for that image would be the "Has-beenendables"... or the "Where are they nowables".

Slightly off-topic and yet...

‘Expendables 3′ Director Boards ‘The Raid’ Remake
http://variety.com/2014/film/news/expen ... 201102289/
Screen Gems is in final negotiations with “The Expendables 3″ helmer Patrick Hughes to direct a remake of the Gareth Evans cult actioner “The Raid.”

In the original, an elite Indonesian S.W.A.T. team raids a building where a gangster and his thugs are embedded and chaos ensues. The remake will have a similar storyline.

Brad Ingelsby penned the script.

Screen Gems is hoping the buzz behind the original and its sequel, which will bow in the states on March 28, will result in fans coming back for the remake.

While the film may not have the same martial art fighting styles included in this film, Hughes’ background with heavy action should should satisfy both fans of the originals and auds not familiar with the original films.

The WME and Brillstein Entertainment-repped Hughes (pictured) is currently in post on Lionsgate’s “The Expendables 3.”

Interesting. I loved the Raid. Really looking forward to the sequel. Generally a frickin hate Hollywood remakes. I don't see how they can compete with the original because the intensity of the violence is what sold it, and Gareth Evans himself is a very good director. In terms of a remake it doesn't really interest me.

HOWEVER, this may well suggest that Patrick Hughes has impressed people on set of Expendables 3. It's a lot of faith to put in this guy before Exp 3 has even come out, so he must have been well recommended to Screen Gems. I think this probably bodes well for Expendables 3.

For sure everybody seemed happy and impressed by by him though it doesn't mean anything before a movie is finished but it seemed more than usual, and I could tell Hugues has some personality (unlike sleepwalking Simon West for instance). That said moving on to a remake (of THE RAID or anything) doesn't seem like such a good career move unless he wants to be typecast in this these movies... On the other hand you can't be too picky in Hollywood these days or you won't work at all.

EDIT:
from FB it seems XYZ is still involved in the process, here's an exchange between journalist Mike Leeder and XYZ partner / Twitch founder Todd Brown:
Mike Leeder i just hope they give him a cast that can handle the physical side of things, and a choreography team that can do it justice....and of course an editor who understands action and doesn't suggest they Bourne identity it all
Todd Brown We're trying our best, Mike ... with a bit of luck you'll be seeing some familiar faces in there.

I think he's being smart. Expendables 3 and The Raid remake have more marketability and a little less risk behind them than maybe other potential projects. Having two back to back hits at least positions him better to work consistently.

I'm shocked to hear about Simon West being somewhat of a deadbeat. I would think being able to juggle the casts of Con Air and Expendables 2 would mean he had a strong personality.
